拿破仑的英语很差

话说拿破仑除了擅长打仗、当皇帝，还精通数学，同时还十分喜爱文学和宗教，但是很少人知道他的英语水平怎么样。这个问题现在有了答案：在上周日法国议会选举那天，在巴黎枫丹白露进行了一场拍卖会，法国书信和手稿博物馆以32万欧元的价格拍得了拿破仑写于1816年3月9日的一封英文信件手稿。

这封英文信件的内容是这样的：

CountLasCase.Itistwoo'clockaftermidnight,Ihaveenowsleep,Igothenfinishthenightintotocausewithyou...HeshalllandabovesevendayashipfromEuropethatweshallgiveaccountfromanythingwhothisshallhavebeeneventodayoffirstjanuarythousandeighthundredsixteen.YoushallhaveforthisocurensaletterfromladyLasCasethatshallyoulearnwhathimselfcouldcarrywellifshehadco[n]ceivetheyouroccurens.ButItiremyselfandyoushallhaveoftheadoatconceivemy...fouro’clockinthemorningandhalf.

这封信的一开始提到Itistwoo'clockaftermidnight（凌晨2点），而结尾提到Fouro’clockinthemorningandhalf（早晨四点半），可见花了不少时间写这封英文信，可是错讹颇多，一些句子恐怕只有懂法语的人才能猜出来个大概。比如Igothenfinishthenightintotocausewithyou一句中的cause就是法语“说话”（causer）的意思。法国媒体上发表的法文“翻译”如下：

比如一开始的这句Ihaveenowsleep，要看上下文才知道不是“要去睡觉了”，而是“睡够了”（Ihaveenoughsleep）。接下来的HeshalllandabovesevendayashipfromEuropethatweshallgiveaccountfromanythingwhothisshallhavebeeneventodayoffirstjanuarythousandeighthundredsixteen，大意应该是“七天后会有一艘从欧洲来的船告诉我们带来自从1816年1月以来发生了什么”。结尾的一句ButItiremyselfandyoushallhaveoftheadoatconceivemy的意思是他很疲倦了，而且认为收信人恐怕也得费点神才能看懂他要表达的意思。

收信人是拿破仑的英语老师拉斯加斯伯爵，在滑铁卢之后于1815年10月陪同拿破仑一起被英国人流放到大西洋的圣赫勒拿岛。在岛上苦闷的日子里，拿破仑开始潜心学习敌人的语言——英语，这封信实际上算是一份学生作业，拉斯加斯伯爵收到后做了批改又送还给了拿破仑。据这位老师当时的记录，拿破仑学习英语很努力，每天花三到五个小时，尤其是口语进步很大。

然而，拿破仑的英语最终也没有在和敌人打交道中派上用场。1821年5月5日，拿破仑在流放中病逝，终年52岁。
